Some of the other members are known, but due to the loss of records and the fact that none now living have a speaking knowledge, we cannot confirm many of our first members. Some of the official proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Ancient York Rite Masons of North Carolina clearly indicate that SW Alexander Murdock from Fulton Lodge #99 in Salisbury, North Carolina conducted the instruction necessary for a new lodge. There are no official records from 1856 until 1873 of Balfour Lodge #188. Early meetings were known to have been held at either J.M.A. Drake's store or The Hamlin Hotel, both being on Old Main Street (rent being $5.00 per month). Construction on our current lodge building began in 1949. The lodge was named after Colonel Andrew Balfour, a native son of Scotland who migrated to this country, settling in Randolph County, NC around 1778. On March 11, 1782, Colonel Balfour was shot and killed at the door of his home by probably the most feared renegade of all - David Fanning. Colonel Balfour's patriotism and loyalty to the colonists had brought about his untimely end. Colonel Balfour and some of his immediate descendants lie in a private burial plot on what is known as part of Balfour Plantation in Union Township, Randolph County.
