VOLUME 4 - November, 2008
To the officers and members of Balfour Lodge #188,

Greetings from the East.  I would like to start by thanking each one of you who have contributed time
and money to your lodge this year. We asked for your support and you have stepped up.  We have
received donations from many of our members and because of those donations, we have exceeded our
goal to balance the budget for the year. Thank you for allowing us to continue to do the good work of
Masonry. I would also like to extend special thanks to the families of our membership that have helped
us with our programs and special events. Masonry is a family affair at Balfour Lodge and without the
hard work and support of our membership and their families it would be nearly impossible to do what
we do.

I hope everyone enjoyed the family picnic in September; I would love to see this become an annual
event at the lodge and welcome each of you to email me with any suggestions on what you would like
to see us do. We have been fortunate to have plenty of degree work this year with one new Master
Mason so far, and several waiting in the wings and upcoming. As busy as we have been so far, it
appears we are just getting wound up and the rest of the year shows no sign of slowing down.

From October 17th –19th, I will be helping the US Navy Sea Cadet corp. as a Firearms instructor for
their Fall encampment, to be held at Tom’s Creek Nursery. This will be the second encampment I have
done for the Sea Cadets on behalf of Balfour Lodge. The event teaches firearms safety and
marksmanship to Cadets Ranging in age from 9-18 years. There are also courses on first aid, CPR, and
some general teamwork building and leadership exercises during the 3-day event. If you have a son or
daughter within this age bracket who would like to participate, or if you would like to help out or
donate to this excellent event, please let me know.

On Friday, November 7th, we will have our 2nd annual Past Masters night, awards banquet, and silent
auction. Auction items will be on display beginning at 4:00 pm, the program begins at 5:00 with dinner
at 6:00. We will be awarding five 25-year service awards and one 60-year service award! I hope to see
all of you there that night. If you have anything you would like to donate to the auction we need to get
it to the lodge as soon as possible so we can make up the bidding sheets - if you cannot bring them to
the lodge, one of us would be happy to pick them up.

On Tuesday, November 11th, members from Balfour Lodge will take part in the Asheboro Veterans
Day parade beginning at 4:30 pm. If you are interested in participating, please let me know.

At our stated communication on Tuesday, November 18th, we will be hosting Most Worshipful
Brother William Brunk, Past Grand Master of Masons and current Sovereign Grand Inspector General
of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of North Carolina. M.:W.: Bro.: Brunk will be presenting a
special program on Masonry. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm and the meeting will begin at 7:30. All
Master Masons are invited to attend the meeting and, as usual, we hope to see your families at the
meal.  Also, as the holidays approach, please keep in mind the children from the Masonic home for
children in Oxford. As always, we will be accepting donations for them for Christmas. We are looking
for phone cards, gift cards for restaurants, etc., and cash is always good.

In closing, I ask that you keep our newest Master Mason, Bro.: Thad Farlow and his young son in
your prayers. Bro.: Farlow will be deployed to Iraq with the National Guard for his second tour in the
coming weeks. His son just started kindergarten this year. Thank you all again for everything you do.
It has been a pleasure serving this Lodge, and I really hate to see my year in the East come to an end.

Fraternally,
